Cats Health Cards N°08. My cat - How to administer it tablets and syrups?
Just like you, your cat will sometimes be sick and it is likely that you will need to administer medication prescribed by your veterinarian. The use of a good method will make life easier for everyone. You should always strictly follow the instructions your veterinarian has given you. You must administer the full amount of prescribed medication for the duration of the veterinarian.
Tablets and capsules
Step 1
Place the tablet or capsule between your thumb and index finger in one hand.
With the other hand, hold the top of the cat's head by placing your thumb and forefinger on its cheekbones.
Step 2
Turn your cat's head backwards, so that his eyes stare at the ceiling.
The lower jaw should open by reflex. If your cat does not open the mouth, put a slight pressure on his lower jaw using your middle finger.
Approach the tablet or capsule from the mouth of the cat.
Step 3
Leave your middle finger on the small incisors of your cat so that his mouth remains open.
Place the tablet or capsule as far as possible on its tongue.
Close the cat's mouth immediately.
Step 4
Rub his throat or blow on his muzzle to make him swallow.
You must act quickly to avoid being bitten.
Liquids and syrups
Prepare the dosage recommended by your veterinarian. Shake the bottle or bottle if indicated.
Step 1
First, fill a syringe or a dropper of the drug.
The liquid medication should be poured into the jugal pocket, that is, into the space between the teeth and the cheek of the cat.
Hold your cat's jaws closed and slightly tilt your head backwards.
Step 2
Carefully insert the medicine contained in the syringe or dropper into your cat's jugal pocket.
Practical advice
Always read the label carefully.
Ask your veterinarian if the medicine can be given with food or if it should be administered to your cat on an empty stomach.
Place your cat on your lap or on a table with no slippery surface.
When you give a medication, remain calm, because your pet can feel your nervousness, which will make your task more difficult. You should always congratulate him and reward him with a treat.
Device for administering tablets and capsules
To avoid putting your fingers in your cat's mouth, you can use a device designed specifically to administer tablets and capsules. It is a plastic tube similar to a syringe that allows the tablet or capsule to be placed in the mouth of the animal.
Place the tablet or capsule at the end of the device.
Hold the device as a syringe, between your index finger and middle finger. Use your thumb to push the plunger.
